Learn More About This Pattern
Pattern games are effective because they give dogs a predictable sequence in moments that might otherwise feel uncertain. In the 2 Step pattern, the dog repeatedly learns: find the treat, move with the handler, pause, look back, and get reinforced again. That repetition creates structure, and structure helps dogs process the environment with less stress because they are no longer trying to solve every detail on their own. The game is especially powerful because it builds both predictability and agency: the dog can notice what is happening around them, then make a successful choice to reorient and continue the pattern. When a helper or trigger appears, the dog is not just being distracted from it—they are practicing a new response to it. Over time, the appearance of that trigger can begin to predict a familiar routine and reinforcement, which supports calmer emotional responses, stronger check-ins, and more confidence in the handler’s guidance.
Tips for Success
For Loose Leash Walking
If you are using this to work with loose leash walking, provide the treat at the top middle of your thigh toyour dog's mouth instead of on the ground. In trainer speak, we call this position paying. We give the treat in the location we want the dog to spend more time in!
