The Nothing Game
Summary
Purpose
The purpose of the Nothing Game is to help your dog learn that calm behavior works. By quietly reinforcing your dog for lying down and staying settled, we build the skill of relaxation in a way that feels safe and clear. Over time, this can help dogs become more comfortable resting in different spaces, handling mild distractions, and staying connected without needing constant direction.
Before You Start
Begin in an easy, quiet indoor space where your dog is likely to succeed. This is not the time to practice near big distractions, exciting visitors, other pets, or busy household activity. Your dog may wiggle, sniff, protest, or try to get your attention at first. That is okay. Stay calm, stay neutral, and wait for the moment your dog chooses to lie down so you can reinforce that choice.
Set Up
You will need a leash, a towel or mat, and either a handful of medium-value treats or calm praise and gentle petting, depending on which version you are practicing. Place the mat at the foot of a chair, sit down, and keep your dog on a short leash of about 12–18 inches. Your hands should rest between your knees while you quietly disengage from your dog until they settle.
